In the past few years there have been an alarming number of cases involving young people abusing prescription drugs. There have been instances where young people are overdosing on these seemingly innocent pills and ending up in poison control centers. The problem with prescription drug abuse is that no one really knows what to do about it. The drugs are legal and prescribed by doctors. However, that does not stop people from buying and selling these powerful drugs on the street. If you or someone you know has developed a prescription drug addiction, it is vital that they seek medical attention as quickly as possible. It may be a good idea for them to also have a prescription drug addiction detox before they go to a residential rehab facility.
Abuse
It is important to be honest with young people when talking about the dangers of prescription drug abuse. Unfortunately, in the past, this does not seem to have been to policy. Young people have more access to information today than at any other time in human history. They will find out the truth one way or another. By being proactive, and telling young people the truth about drugs, they will be much more likely to trust and believe people who are talking to them in a matter of fact manner. A drug abuse addiction is a serious issue.
Society
Prescription drug abuse is prevalent in our society. There are plenty of examples of movies and television shows making fun of the problem by showing characters that are funny and down pills like they are skittles. The problem with this depiction is that they never talk about the serious health risks that go with prescription drug abuse. It is far too easy for individuals to underestimate the risk they are taking when they abuse prescription drugs. Many people die every single year from prescription drug abuse, yet no one seems to want to talk about it. Until we get serious about educating people on the dangers of prescription drug abuse, the problem won’t be going away anytime soon.
Research
Prescription drugs, if taken in the proper context, can be very helpful for individuals who suffer from different ailments. It is when people who do not need them abuse them that a problem arises. These drugs are very potent and can cause a dependency very quickly if a person begins to abuse them on a regular basis. By having an honest dialogue with young people about the inherent dangers of prescription drug abuse society will have a much greater chance of curtailing the prescription drug abuse epidemic.
Deaths
Recently, there has been a string of high profile deaths involving various celebrities overdosing on prescription drugs. In most of these cases, alcohol has been involved. This is a deadly combination that many young people are trying every day. When an individual uses prescription drugs and alcohol together they are asking for disaster. These pills are not meant to be taken with alcohol. However, once a person begins abusing prescription drugs their judgment becomes severely impaired. This can cause them to do many foolish things while under the influence of these pills that they would not otherwise do.
